Where we started…

Since 1961, the OKFD has been serving the recreational and socialization needs of Oklahoma adults with disabilities.  Established by the National Council of Jewish Women through a grant from the Oklahoma City Junior Hospitality Club, the organization remains focused on the individual clients’ abilities, not their limitations.

The establishment of the OKFD followed a community survey of need by Oklahoma physical, occupational and psychotherapists.  The survey indicated a need for a recreational facility that would reinforce post-therapy progress by assisting persons with disabilities with the process of re-entering and participating in a world unaccustomed to disabilities.

For the first six years the organization was located at NW 33rd and Classen Blvd.  In 1967 members of the OKFD Board of Directors approached Oklahoma City business and civic leader, Sylvan Goodman for assistance in acquiring a different facility.  He graciously donated the current land and building.

In 2010, OKFD was awarded a $100,000 grant from Impact Oklahoma to construct a 4,000 square foot recreation center.  This facility represents the first building addition at the foundation since the organization began operations in 1961. In addition to the Impact Oklahoma grant, the Kirkpatrick Family Fund and individuals also made donations to the project.  The center, which is used daily, allows clients to play basketball, use exercise equipment, hold special events. classes and more.

In 2017, over $220,000 was raised through the donations of numerous area non-profits and individuals to construct what is referred to as the Health and Wellness Park on the property.  With trails and an array of playground equipment, the park provides an outdoor space for the clients to walk and enjoy the outdoors.
